E3 Coverage

We got a chance to sit down with a couple of the developers of Firefly Studios' Dungeon Hero and get a closer look at what is shaping up to be a very interesting title.

You play a nameless hero, fighting for the men and women of this village. Only thing is, you are technically a psychopath and these 'men and women' are technically Goblins.Your character is human, and it remains to be seen why you are exactly helping the little whelps but maybe thats where the 'psychopath' part fits in.

Firefly Studios is developing a whole working Goblin city for you to play in, all nestled safely underground with Goblins going about their day to day chores. We saw them fishing, moving cargo, peeing on the side of a building. It had a very realistic and 'human' feel to what we saw, even with the fact that they are creatures. That's right, all was well with the Goblin world until another faction of Goblin went hostile and began attacking.

The game is set up in with a linear storyline and the developers tell us you will be able to fight from 20-30 mobs at once. While on the outside, the visuals still looked great even with the two devs telling us it had a 'long way to go', the game looks a bit like God of War in inspiration. The bald hero doesn't help that. However, this inspiration is cut short when you begin moving through the city and battlefields that come complete with Goblin triage centers, medical hospitals, pubs, and other areas where you can see the Goblins interact, not only with you, but each other. The camera moves slightly above your character when you enter combat, and the fighting consists of a combination of attacks you can use. Aside from 'light' and 'heavy' attack movements which will remain your staples throughout the game, you will gain special attacks via leveling up and be able to wield not only a sword & shield, but also a large two-handed axe as well as dual-wield one-handed swords. The combination of the weapon types with your special attacks really give a large amount of customization to your character type.

The combat in the title was described as 'gritty and realistic' by our dev, but was not finished as of yet to make a learned opinion. What we can tell you from our meeting is that the combat looks more about using  your basic abilities (such as 'light or heavy' attacks) in combination with dodging to add to that 'live and die by your wits' stylings. The boss battle we saw had the 'hero' face off against this brutish beast of a character (see screenshots). Combat was all about sticking and moving. Looked like a blast and we can't wait to see it closer to release (which is looking to be sometime in 2009).

Being avid PC developers, Firefly Studios have branched out with creating  Dungeon Hero to be released on the Xbox 360 as well as PC platforms.
