In our first video interview from the 2008 E3 expo, we got the chance to speak with Doug Lombardi regarding their upcoming zombie FPS, Left4Dead. Scheduled for a November 4th release, Left4Dead features an up to four-player coop campaign mode through 5 different stages chronicling the events of a zombie apocalypse.
Inspired by zombie films, the game uses an AI they call 'The Director' to literally direct the action in the game world. This AI will send different types and quantities of zombies at the players depending on their skill level. This provides a unique game experience every time.
Level atmospherics are just amazing, with weather and lens effects that are meant to make you feel as if you are inside a zombie film. Depth of field, blood splatter on the virtual camera lens, and blacking out when near death are just the tip of the iceberg. When a player gets in cramped quarters or a dark area (making use of a flashlight), they will sometimes have a 'freak out' and start breathing heavily in response. Pfgonzo got the chance to play it for about thirty minutes and just raved about its intensity and frenetic horror.
