Two Gamestop locations played host to a Call of Duty: World at War tournament/event on Monday evening, where gamers pitted themselves against US Marines in 29 Palms and US Army soldiers in Fort Drum, NY. The Pentagon City Mall Gamestop in Washington, DC as well as the Powell St location in San Francisco, CA were the bases of operation for the non-military gamers, and even though the Marines from 29 Palms won the day in a grueling tie-breaker, everyone had a great time.

Official Release:
On the eve of Veterans Day, GameStop and Activision Publishing, Inc. hosted two marquee events with the USO for the release of Call of Duty(R): World at War at its Washington, DC - Pentagon City Mall and San Francisco - Powell Street stores. The pre-release events provided customers the opportunity to play in real-time, tournament-style competitions via Xbox live against soldiers stationed at Fort Drum, NY, and Marines stationed at 29 Palms, CA. Customers were given the exclusive opportunity to buy the new blockbuster title in advance of today's national release. Additionally, for every copy of the game purchased at the Washington, D.C., Gamestop store at Pentagon City Mall, Activision made a monetary donation to the USO.

Several hundred gamers flocked to the Powell Street event, where after 16 planned six-on-six matches, the Marines at 29 Palms won the tie-breaking game to secure bragging rights. David Vonderhaar, Multiplayer Game Design Director for developer Treyarch, was on hand to autograph copies of the game and GameStop gift cards were awarded to tournament participants. Additional prizes were raffled off through the night and GameStop later donated the six Xbox 360 units used in the competition to the 29 Palms base.
