We got the chance to talk with Microsoft's Jim Ying about the control system implemented in Ensemble Studios' Halo Wars at this year's CES in Las Vegas, NV. Halo Wars will be released on March 3rd for the Xbox 360 platform with a demo out on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace starting February 5th. The game is set in the Halo universe in the early days of the UNSC-Covenant war.

Chief on the minds of gamers is how the game is controlled as, with few exceptions, real-time strategy games are notoriously difficult to play on consoles. In the past, RTS games have mainly been developed on the PC where a keyboard and mouse lend themselves well to playing them.

Ying shows off the game's radial build menus as well as unit selection methods, which includes an individual selection tool as well as a paint brush selection tool. Also, you are able to select all units on your screen at once by hitting the right bumper button. Ensemble has also added an easy way of selecting a unit's secondary attack by simply pressing the 'Y' button when the unit it selected.

It's too bad the game won't be available on PCs any time soon.
