The Greek Theater - Los Angeles, CA. This venue which I have frequented over the last two decades attending several concerts had now been prepared to greet several celebrities who were attending the 2009 Spike TV Scream Awards. Celebs were due on the carpet at 5:30pm; the show was scheduled to start taping at 7:00pm. I took my position on the carpet shortly before 5:00pm. Then I waited.
On the way to my spot on the carpet (which wasn’t actually a red carpet at all for this show – it was black and white checkered linoleum), I was greeted by a sea of people who had come out to see the event. These people were true fans of what was going to be covered that night. 3 out of every 5 guests in attendance was in costume. The costumes came in many forms, from Renaissance-era garb to zombies and even some very recognizable standouts such as The Watchmen, and Starfleet Personnel. If it was a popular sci-fi, fantasy or horror character, there was someone dressed up like them.... (cont.)

(cont.) ...At about 5:15pm, the first celebrity arrived on the scene… It was the Unicorn from The Chronicles of Narnia movies. It was there, immediately across from me, and was destined to be a big draw for the celebrities the rest of the night. It made my job a bit easier, seeing that most of them coming down the carpet paused to take pictures with him. Some of the highlights for me were taking pictures of the lovely Olivia Munn, Mr. Dave Navarro, and I had one of those “oh S#!t” moments when I took pictures of Stan “The Man” Lee. At one point, I heard a voice next to me shouting “Cry baby! Cry!!!” I recognized the voice and I turned to see Zack Ward (Scott Farkus from Christmas Story) conducting an interview. All in all, it was very fun to be there. I snapped off a few last minute shots of Eli Roth and even got a horrible attempt at a shot of Keith Richards as they ran him by when they were closing the doors to the venue. Once the doors closed, I made my way to the Press tent, where I sat down with my iPhone to take notes on the excitement that was happening on-stage.
As you will see on the show tonight, Johnny Depp showed up to make an acceptance speech for Alice in Wonderland. Harrison Ford was in attendance. Quentin Tarantino presented a special award to George Romero – I can’t wait to see how they handled Quentin’s remarks for the actual broadcast… William Shatner’s acceptance speech on behalf of JJ Abrams is pure Shatner gold. And the finale with Stan Lee is really something to behold.
I hope you all enjoy the pictures I was able to take from the red carpet. I want to thank Spike TV for having GamingShogun out for the evening. Although it was a bummer not being to actually Live-Blog the event, I had a great time and look forward to providing you all with even bigger and better coverage next time! Until then this is Whatamaroon - EXCELSIOR and enjoy the following photos I snapped at the event!!!
